Edward Archer Leake, Jr. died Thursday, February 17, 2022, near his beloved Gloucester Banks, VA. He was 92. Eddie was born September 23, 1929, to Anna Beveridge Leake and Edward Archer Leake. He was the brother of Frank Beveridge Leake who predeceased him. Eddie attended St. Christopher’s School and graduated from Episcopal High School and the University of Virginia. After UVA, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. where he served active duty from 1951-1952 and reserve duty from 1953-1958. Eddie was a storyteller, an historian, and a genealogist. His favorite topics were the friends and experiences he encountered while growing up in The Fan, boarding at EHS, dancing at St. Anthony’s Hall, and serving in Korea. His passion for Virginia history came from his boyhood summers at Gloucester Banks on the York River. Eddie loved to regale listeners on all Virginia-related topics, with a particular knack for minutiae not found in textbooks. While many of his vignettes were apocryphal, his versions were far more interesting, and Eddie’s versions of Yorktown battles will carry forward for years to come. Finally, there was genealogy. To engage him in conversation was to learn one’s own lineage and to learn that you were somehow related to a famous Virginian. Eddie’s finest hour was to convince the great-great-great-grandson of the Marquis de Lafayette, who was attending the Bicentennial Ceremony of the Battle of Yorktown, to come across the river and pick crabs with the Gloucester Banks gang. Edward was a member of The Society of the Cincinnati, The Sons of the Revolution, the Jamestown Foundation, and the Eli Banana Ribbon Society. He was a member of St. James’s Episcopal Church for over 70 years. He is survived by his four children, Edward Archer Leake, III, Charles Slingluff Leake (Rebecca), Francis Carter Leake (Elise), Emilie Leake Reddoch (Jim); eight grandchildren, Hunter, Giles, and Caroline Leake, Frances, Walker, and Ellie Leake, Charles Reddoch and Hampton Reddoch; and his nieces, Laura Leake Brown, Anna Leake Smith, and Nan Leake. There will be a graveside funeral at Hollywood Cemetery on Monday, February 28, 2022, at 1:00 pm. Services under the direction of Hogg Funeral Home.
